The shifting from happy to sad is often used to show the contrasts. In minute 33.26, we can see Tom enters the escalator with happy smile (because eventually he had sex with Summer the previous night- he thought he won Summer’s heart). But afterwards, we see the opening screen leads us to the day 303 where the brokenhearted Tom is seen through the opening escalator (the same escalator-office escalator actually) with his sad and depressed face. The contrast here is very obvious. In another scene when Tom goes to the cinema with Summer, they sit down and look very happy together. But in just a second, the day changes and we can see Tom, sitting alone, looking all miserable because he lost his love.
